The TOEFL: for higher education abroad
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the reference test for applying to an English-speaking university — especially in the USA, but also Canada, Australia and part of Europe. Over 11,500 universities accept it worldwide.
- Format: TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test), 2 hours on computer
- Skills assessed: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing (4 sections of 30 points)
- Score: out of 120 — US universities usually require 80 to 100+
- Validity: 2 years
The TOEIC: for the professional world
The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) assesses your English in professional situations. It is widely used in recruitment by multinationals, notably in Côte d’Ivoire for export, banking, international trade or NGO roles.
- Format: Listening & Reading, 2 hours, paper or computer
- Score: out of 990 — B2 level is 785+, C1 is 945+
- Validity: 2 years
How to choose?
- You aim for a university abroad → TOEFL
- You apply for a role requiring professional English → TOEIC
- You want to prove your level to an Ivorian recruiter → TOEIC is enough in most cases
- You apply for a US/Canada work visa → TOEFL recommended
